Inquirer.net : Toys 'R' Us sends notice to Massage 'R' Us

Source : Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- Toys 'R' Us, the "leading kids' store for toys, video games, baby products, and more," according to toysrus.com, has threatened to take legal action against Massage 'R' Us, a local home service massage and beauty treatment business for alleged copyright infringement.

Massage 'R' Us, which specializes in shiatsu and Swedish massage, blow dry, manicure, and pedicure to private villages around Metro Manila, is owned and operated by a group of housewives and was legally incorporated and registered in 2002.

In an interview with INQUIRER.net, Massage 'R' Us owners said that Geoffrey Inc., through its legal counsel, sent a notice Tuesday, claiming that the foreign enterprise has a copyright for the phrase "'R' Us."

The owners said that the Geoffrey Inc. has asked them to drop the "'R' Us" from the name of their business and stop its use in advertising materials.

The owners said that they were given 10 days to respond to the letter and comply with the demands of Geoffrey Inc. or face legal action under Philippine laws.

I find it funny for two reasons:

(1) Toys R Us has been with us for ages so theres no contest whatsoever if you ask me. I mean massage and toys are two different things (unless you use a remote controlled car as part of the massage, then were in trouble.) So for this news, it's standard Filipino conservative thinking that comes into play rather than "image preservation".

(2) I know some people who would actually buy stuff from Toys R Us, then go to massage R Us (to relieve them of their stressed muscles and aching bones after a long day of haggling for good deals and looking for toys.) which makes more sense to me than ever before.

Here's something you don't see everyday....
