Initial Review of Bob Ong's Kapitan Sino

So Bob Ong's new book has recently appeared and as I fan I am once again ecstatic. First things, first, we have to accept the fact that Bob is no longer limited to writing funny essays about life (we saw the last of that in "Stainless Longganisa").

Now onto my initial review. I bought this together with Fables Volume 2 and I decided to forgo reading Wilmingham and opt for Ong. The setting is set in the 80s in a place similar to where we grew up (natch, rhetorical), where we met Rogelio, a simple electrician that suddenly finds himself having super powers.

Thanks to his bumbling bestfriend Bok-Bok, Rogelio decides to help as much as he can.

** End of Summary**

Despite now being a full fledged novelist, Bob Ong does not miss a beat with his classic "hirits" and his allusions to several things we have all grown fond or grown up with.

Funny Komiks, Bananarama, Menudo (and their song "If your not here"), Tarzan, Pritos Ring, Rinbee are amongst the things that have been mentioned and used in order to color the place where our hero resides in.

It may be funny but its also dramatic. Reading through the first few pages, especially the scenes where Rogelio and his parents are eating silently with only his mom breaking the silence that envelopes the house is a great dramatic scene.

It also gives foreigners a better insight into the world of the average Filipino.

Bob Ong's Kapitan Sino also creates funny situations thats is typical in any Ong book.

One of the funniest lines I have read so far was a conversation between the TV reporter and a jeepney driver regarding what all the commotion was.

Jeepney Driver: May naglanding na ISPISHIP!
Reporter: May nag-landing na space ship?
Jeepney Driver: May nag-landing na space ship na may dalang taong ahas....

I swear to the heavens, I was laughing hard in the clinic while waiting for my girl to finish up.

Overall, despite only an initial review. I would definitely give this book a solid 10/10. A classic in the making.

Why Does Everybody Hate Bucky Barnes?

I'm just curious. Why does everybody hate the current Captain America Bucky Barnes AKA Winter Soldier?

I admit at first I really didn't like the idea of having Steve Rogers killed on his way for trial post-Civil War.

With the idea that Sharon Carter, his girlfriend pulling the trigger.

And then for a couple of issues, were left with a comic book with no Captain America whatsoever, instead we witness the story of the rise of the new Captain America in the form of Bucky. We also encounter several plot points that were laid out for a "possible" return of the one true Captain America.

During his stint as the new Captain America, Bucky proved in many ways that he is still inexperienced. Not only as a hero but also as a leader, but despite all this, he strives and proves that no matter what happens, he will make Steve proud.

And that's the endearing quality I found likable in Mr. Barnes. In some small way, I try to emulate those ideals. That despite how fucked up my past is or how screwed up my future will be, I strive to be a better man everyday.

So I may be a minority here but I'm going to say this anyway, I like the New Captain America. And I'd like him to stay. I don't want Steve Rogers coming back and ruining every glorious thing that has ever been built by Bucky.

Spielberg and Will Smith push through with "OLD BOY"

Wow. Stunning. Apparently, despite the ongoing legal battle between the Korean film outfit who produced the Korean version of the manga and Spielgberg's camp , the Oscar winning director and actor Will Smith will push through with the "remake" of Oldboy.

I wasnt aware of the story, so I paid my old friend WIKIPEDIA a visit. And he stated that the movie (loosely summarized) was about a businessman who gets imprisoned in a private prison for 15 years with only a television for company. While a captive, he witnesses news reports of his wife's grisly murder with him being the primary suspect and the subsequent adoption of his daughter. 15 years later, he is suddenly released for no apparent reason.

Following a bloody path similar to Kill Bill, the man looks for the man responsible for his misery. Along the way he meets and falls in love with a sushi chef. They obviously have hot passionate sex.

And then the kicker. Upon confronting the mastermind, they play a game of piecing the puzzle. Apparently the protagonist and the antagonist went to the same high school together. It was there that our hero finds out that the antagonist is having hot derrrty sex with another student. He spreads the rumor (oblivious to the fact that his classmate and the girl he was having sex with were siblings!!!!!) which later grows out of control (he doesnt pay the price because he transfers the next school year.) The scandal results in the suicide of the girl due to her shame. Winning the game, the mastermind admits that the reason for his abduction, his wife's murder and the adoption of his daughter was premeditated for this particular meeting. The antagonist reveals to our hero, that his daughter had grown up and has become the sushi chef.

DAMN!

Now upon learning this new development, our hero cuts off his tongue as a pact to ensure that his daughter/ lover does not find out that her lover is also her dad (Elektra Complex) Flash forward, we see the man asking a hypnotist to remove that jarring memory so he could continue loving his wife/ daughter without being disgusted. And then they live happily ever after.
